1976

While running for the university track team, he discovered hurdling and became a specialist in the 400 meters. At 21, he took part in the Montreal Olympic Games (his first international competition), immediately winning the gold medal and setting the world record in the 400 meters hurdles.

1983

He won his first World Championship, in Helsinki. On August 31, in Koblenz, he further improved the world record. The following year he won his second Olympic gold, at the Los Angeles Games.

1987

He won his second World Championship, in Rome. A year later he concluded his competitive career at the Olympic Games in Seoul, where he won the bronze. Considered the greatest athlete ever in the 400 meters hurdles, during his career he won 107 consecutive finals, remaining undefeated for almost a decade.

2012

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Athletics Federation. He was awarded with the Fair Play Menarini International Award twice (in 2004 and 2008), also thanks to his commitment to anti-doping policies as a sports administrator. He took part in the talk show “The Champions Tell their Stories” in both 2022 and 2023.
