1988

He made his debut in the Serie A League with Milan. In 1990, he was loaned out to Padova and started playing regularly in top flight games, demonstrating his playmaking skills in midfield and scoring his first goals.

1991

On his return to Milan, he soon became the heart and soul of the team. Nicknamed the ‘metronome’ for his ability to dictate the rhythm of the game, he racked up 406 appearances and scored 28 goals winning 15 trophies, including 5 Serie A and 3 Champion League titles. He also became a cornerstone of the Italian National side in the same period. His assists were decisive in the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA and the 2000 UEFA European Championship hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, where the Italian side were runners-up in both championships.

2002

After leaving Milan, he made his debut in the Spanish La Liga, playing for Atletico Madrid. He later moved first to Lazio, winning a Coppa Italia and then to Atalanta. He ended his career with Barcelona with whom he won the Spanish League title.

2006

After retiring from professional football, he embarked on a career as football manager. In the past, he held many roles, including vice-president and vice-commissioner of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), head of the Italian team, president of the FIGC Technical Sector, member of the CONI National Athletes Commission and member of the Presidency of the Council and CONI ‘Destination Sport’ project.
