Aged just fourteen, he won his first Italian boxing championship in the "Kangaroo" category. From there, he went on to win another four consecutive titles in various categories, before moving up into the Italian Elite Championship in 2001. In all, he won nine Elite titles of which eight back to back.
He was crowned Heavyweight Champion of the World in Chicago, beating the Russian contender, Rachim Chakhkiev, in the final. The following year, he achieved his first Olympic success with a silver medal at the Beijing Games, where he was the flag bearer for the Italian contingent in the closing ceremony.
He won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in London. A year later, he was once again crowned Heavyweight Champion of the World in Almaty.
He finally hung up his boxing gloves and became technical director of the ‘Fiamme Azzurre’ (Penitentiary Police) sports group. He is still the boxer with the greatest number of fights to his name in the history of Italian boxing.
