Raised in the Cesena youth academy, at the age of 18 he made his debut in Serie A with Milan, under the guidance of Capello, which began his long career wearing the black and red uniform. In fact, he remained at Milan for 17 seasons, becoming their captain in 2009 and winning 4 league titles and 2 Champions Leagues
He made his debut on the Italian National team, coached by Zoff, winning the title of vicechampion of Europe in 2000 and earning a place on the Olympic national team for the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games
At age 36, he got back into the game with the Fiorentina: in the purple jersey he made 30 appearances, playing his last game in Serie A on May 11th, 2014 before announcing his retirement.
After hanging up his soccer cleats, he became a technical commentator for Sky, DAZN and Amazon Prime, also covering the role of head of delegation of the Italy national under-21 soccer team in the three-year period between 2018-2021.
