At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun, Federico won the gold medal in the freestyle sprint race. This was Italy’s first men’s world title in cross-country skiing, establishing him among the world’s best sprinters.
At the World Championships in Lahti, he won the gold medal in the sprint and the silver in the team sprint. Shortly thereafter, he was among the winners of the Fair Play Menarini International Award.
At the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Federico won an extraordinary silver medal in the freestyle sprint. It was one of the most important medals in the history of Italian cross-country skiing.
At the Beijing Olympic Games, he climbed onto the podium again, winning another silver medal in the sprint. With this result, he became one of the strongest Italian cross-country skiers of all time.
