DOWNHILL SKIING – SLALOM

2006

He was the very first competitor in the slalom, his speciality, at the Turin Winter Games,recording the third fastest time in the first run. In the same year, “Razzo” (rocket) as he was nicknamed, became the Italian champion, a title that he would win a further two times in his career.

2009

On the slopes in Zagreb, he gained his first podium place in the World Cup, finishing third in the slalom. A few weeks later, he claimed his first win in the European Cup, at Monte Pora.

2010

He obtained his first victory in the World Cup. In February, he was crowned Olympic champion at the Vancouver Winter Games, bringing home gold in the slalom, 22 years after the last Italian win. The following year, he won the Fair Play Menarini International Award.

2022

At the age of 38, he won his last medal in the World Cup with a third place at Wengen, setting the record as the oldest athlete in the competition to win a medal in the slalom. He bid farewell to the Olympics at the Beijing Winter Games where he came eighth, missing out on the podium by just 26 hundredths of a second. He retired from competitive sport in May 2024. The same year, in November, he participated in the talk show “Fair Play Menarini – The Champions Tell their Stories”.
