1987

He played his first games as a starter for Milan, winning the Serie A League title on his debut year. From the following season, ‘Billy’, as he was known, became a permanent part of the team, winning consecutive Champions Leagues, plus the Uefa Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup. Together with Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini, he formed one of the all-time great defences for the Milan club with.

1991

He made his debut for Italy as part of the runners-up team in the 1994 World Cup. He earned 59 caps for the Italian squad up until 1998 (3 of which as captain), scoring 2 goals.

2007

He played his very last game at the age of forty-one. In twenty consecutive seasons at Milan, he made 458 appearances in league matches and 663 times in total, racking up an impressive trophy haul: 7 League titles, 5 Champions Leagues, 5 Italian Super Cups and 4 Uefa Super Cups.

2008

After retiring from football, he took on the role of technical assistant for Milan under Carlo Ancellotti and later, as coach of Mantova. Since 2010, he has been part of the Sky team as a football pundit.
